Tomás Hidalgo
Documentary and people-first video
Documentary filmmaker and impact storyteller
Telling stories of resilience and grassroots leadership.
Hello, I am Tomás.
Growing up between France, Chile and the United States made me curious about how people live and connect across different worlds. That shaped how I see things. The camera is an extension of that: it lets me share what I see and bring real people to the screen.
I started out photographing nightlife. I had a passion for sound system music, and for watching people dance and express themselves without a second thought. It's a culture that doesn't care how it looks. It shows up radically authentic. Those nights taught me to read a room and wait for the real moment, and that's how I moved into film, where those moments get more room to breathe.
These days I make documentaries and people-first video, and my focus is using what I know to help the community around me. My recent film, MANDO: Youth Mentors on a Mission, is the closest to what I care about most: sitting down with people, earning their trust, and giving them room to tell their own stories.
Why I do this
I want to help people be heard who don't have the means to tell their story fully.
Making MANDO changed how I see the work. Getting to know nonprofit organizations and the causes they take on, I stopped chasing technical perfection with cameras. I'd rather give back, and keep telling stories that can make even a small difference. A small difference can ripple much further than where it starts.
That's what I'm trying to do: bring some joy, some peace and some celebration into the world through film. It's my part.
If you have a story, a cause or a community project you care about, let's talk.
